A Turtle on a Fencepost

Hebrews 11 is often called the “who’s who of faithful people” or the “Hall of Faith”. Sometimes we lift up this prominent group and make them loftier than they are forgetting that they were once idol worshippers, murderers, illegitimate children, and prostitutes. God uses people as God chooses to use people. Many people want the fame and notoriety of Abraham, without realizing that Abraham, at that time, didn’t have fame or notoriety. These folks never got caught up in who they were, they were totally impressed with Who put them there.

Allan Emery wrote a book entitled, A Turtle on a Fencepost. One time Allan picked up a respected man in the Christian world, by the name of Dr. Robert Leman, who was pastoring the First Presbyterian Church and was influencing the lives of thousands of people for the cause of Jesus Christ. As Allan was taking Dr. Leman to his church for a series of meetings, Robert spoke of his ministry in his own church as if he were a spectator. Finally, Allan said, “Sir, I’m sure you understand that your ministry is directly related to your gifts and abilities.” This spiritual man said, “When I was a school boy, walking along a dirt road on my way to school, I would occasionally see a turtle on a fencepost. I knew he didn’t get there by himself – someone put him there. I view my life like that. I am a turtle on a fencepost. I am where I am because God put me there.”

The beginning of faith in my life, and in your life, is coming to the realization that I am where I am because God put me there. It doesn’t matter if it is using my hands in building things or using my hands to direct others to build things for me; it does not matter if it is in the youth ministry, music ministry, mission field or the senior pastorate, God has put me there. Can you say to yourself, “God, I want to yield to Your sovereignty and believe, in faith, that You have put me where You have wanted me”? This is what you will find in Hebrews 11. There are no perfect people in this chapter. There are just “turtles” who allowed God to put them on certain “fence posts”.

Are you content with where God has put you? Are you faithful to serve where God has put you? Are you caught up in who you are or are you more interested in Who put you where you are?

These Two Things

There are only two things that God needs us to strive for. Hebrews 12:1-6 gives Jesus as out example to follow. Hebrews 12:7-13 basically says to “get over your whining,” expect discipline and walk straight to be molded into useful tools for God’s use. In Hebrews 12:14, the writer gives only two things to strive for in life. They are important as the writer of Hebrews says that without them, “no one will see the Lord.”

The first, is peace. Not just peace, but “peace with everyone.” Why would having peace with everyone be important for people to see God? That was a rhetorical question (with a just a hint of sarcasm thrown in!) There are bumper stickers still floating around that say, “Know peace/ Know Jesus. No Peace/No Jesus.” Makes sense. It starts with peace with yourself. If you can be at peace with who you are, then peace with others comes more naturally. Practically, it means that you accept what and whom God made you to be. If you struggle with who you are (as a person, mother, father, child, worker, career, your weight, your looks, your self esteem, etc.) you can never be at peace with other people. When you accept that you are a child of God worthy of the blood of His son and equal with every person in a sinful condition, you’re on the right track. Being at peace with everyone means that the first person someone else should see in you is Jesus.

Second, we are to strive for the holiness. Holiness simply means being set apart. The holiness implies that we are set apart for a specific purpose. In this case, we are set apart for God’s use. We are not of this world as Christians. We belong to Christ. (1 Corinthians 6:20), “For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body.”

We are bondservants for God’s use. That means when we accepted Christ as our LORD and Savior, we placed ourselves into eternal servitude to Jesus for His use. Holiness simply means that we have set aside our plans, our desires, our wants, for Jesus’ desires, plans, and wants. Does He want us to stop living life the way we do now? Maybe not, but how open have we been to what God wants us to do?

With these two things, “peace with everyone and the holiness,” people will begin to see the Lord. So . . . . how many people are seeing Jesus in you?

A Spiritual Spanking

As a parent, discipline is one of those subjects that is necessary, but not fun. I’d rather enjoy keeping peace in the house, but from time to time, children cross the line and discipline is needed. God commands it and a lot of time I blame the fact that I have to discipline my children, on God. He’s big enough to handle that. Besides, “spare the rod, spoil the child” right? (Proverbs 13:24)

Sometimes I think about God that way. His word says that He “disciplines the one He loves, and chastises every son whom He receives.” (Proverbs 3:12) However, God’s discipline is different. There are times of testing. (James 1:2-4) There are times of rebuke and chastisement. There are times that God has made people sick, hard hearted, etc.

In Hebrews 12:3-11, we see a different kind of discipline. I’ve always associated this discipline with the same discipline of a father. After all, the writer of Hebrews uses the father as an illustration. “It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline? If you are left without discipline, in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. Besides this, we have had earthly fathers who disciplined us and we respected them. Shall we not much more be subject to the Father of spirits and live? For they disciplined us for a short time as it seemed best to them, but He disciplines us for our good, that we may share His holiness.” Hebrews 12:7-10

God’s discipline is different. Hebrews 12:3-4 begins this part of the lesson by stating that we should use Jesus as our example. Not only use Jesus as the example, but compare our sufferings with His. “Consider Him who endured from sinners such hostility against Himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted. In your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.” Hebrews 12:3-4

God disciplines us through allowing things to happen to us, in order to strengthen us. He doesn’t pull out the “spiritual belt” and pound us. Most times God just simply allows us to experience things in order to “not grow weary or faint hearted.” It’s more of “spiritual weightlifting” than discipline. By going through these various endurances, we are strengthening ourselves for the bigger tasks that God wants us to do. You wouldn’t give a child a 400 pound barbell to lift? Naturally you begin with small weights and work up to whatever weight they are able to handle. Over time, you add more weight so they can grow stronger.

In the same respect, God simply allows more weight to be added to our lives in order to strengthen us. The good news? “No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.” (1 Corinthians 10:13)

How is God allowing you to be disciplined?

The Joy of the Ending

Movies lately have been adopting a different sort of tactic when it comes to the ending of a film. There are many films that claim “reality doesn’t always get packaged up with a bow, and happy all the time.” Yet, humans from their very existence have been in pursuit of the happy ending for their own lives. Many pursue it through materialistic means (cars, money, houses, gifts). Some, unable to handle reality, pursue the happy ending through addiction. Yet others pursue the happy ending through isolation and cutting themselves off from reality. All these work great in life, but as the old saying goes, “You can’t take it with you.”

As Christians, why do we strive so hard to live a happy existence? We can spend more time worried about money, food, clothes, what other people think about what we’re wearing, out kids, our parents, what other people think about our kids or parents, what our parents think about our kids, what our kids think about our parents, why our kids don’t think, etc. You get the picture. We focus so heavily on our life that we miss Jesus altogether. “No soldier gets entangled in civilian pursuits, since his aim is to please the one who enlisted him.” 2 Timothy 2:4.

So since we are “soldiers”, and not to get “entangled with civilian pursuits”, how then do we live life? Where is out primary focus? The Sunday School answer, and right answer, is Jesus. He is our example in living. Hebrews 12:2 says, “looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

We are to “look to Jesus” as our example. He is the one who designed, built, lived and perfected out faith. He did it in reality. He did it here on earth.. He lived it to perfection. According to this verse, He was able to live through “the cross, the shame”, the temptation, everything because he focused on “the joy that was set before Him.” He kept His eyes on the ending. The happy one. The joyful one.

In the same way, every saved believer has a happy ending. We ultimately will be at the feet of Jesus worshipping Him for eternity. If we could focus on the ending, and not get caught up in the middle, I believe we would be joyful people instead of worried all the time and “entangled” in what the world has to offer.

Turn your eyes upon Jesus,
Look full in His wonderful face,
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim,
In the light of His glory and grace.

Where are you looking?

Danger Will Robinson! Part 2

The only way to spot danger is to have a foundation in place. Without a foundation, there is no way to know what is dangerous and what is not. The robot in Lost in Space was able to spot danger and yell out “Danger Will Robinson! Danger”, so that whoever was around would hear it. The robot was programmed with a foundation to know the difference between acceptable situations and dangerous ones.

Christians have the same defense mechanism in the Holy Spirit. As we read God’s word, that foundation begins to be programmed inside each saved believer in Christ. Occasionally, the Holy Spirit begins to sound an alarm, “Danger Art! Danger!” As a church leader, sometimes the Holy Spirit goes off and alarms the church as well.

Hebrews 10:19-23 begins to lay the foundation for approaching a holy God. Then the alarm goes off in verse 24. “And let us consider how to stir up one another in to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.” (Hebrews 10:24-25)

The church is made to first “stir up one another in love and good works.” So how are we doing? Do we “stir each other up” or tear each other down? Do we “stir each other up” in something other than love? For the definition of love, see 1 Corinthians 13:4. Do we as the church “stir each other up in love and good works?” or are we more concerned about “stirring each other up to feel better?” These are hard questions, but in order to be considered “faithful”, these are questions that must be answered.

How about “meeting together?” It doesn’t say that people need to be there every time the church is open. The Hebrews went to the temple once to sacrifice and observed the sabbath once a week. Most churches have multiple worship services. Pick one time and go, but go with the intention to “stir each other up to love and good works.”

The writer then “swings for the fence” by stating that we are supposed to gather together to “encourage one another”. How much encouraging goes on in the average church? I’ve seen back biting, gossiping, slandering, complaining, whining, and using God’s house for opportunistic ventures. Encouraging one another? Not so much. There is a remnant in some churches, but encouragement is not the norm.

This is when the robot begins to screech, “Danger!” If the church you are in cannot conform to the standard that God has laid out, maybe it’s time for lots of prayer and a literal “come to Jesus” meeting. However, it all starts with you. Do you attend church because your friends are there? Or do you go to encourage other people, stir other people up to love and good works?

What is the Holy Spirit’s alarm doing in your life?
